AED Hunt on the Hill

On September 27, the Children's Cardiomyopathy Foundation held the 4th annual AED Hunt on the Hill at the Capitol in partnership with Congressman Phil Roe (TN-1).

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) claims more than 350,000 lives in the United States every year, and it is the leading cause of death on school property. Often, the cause is an undetected heart condition such as cardiomyopathy. Cardiomyopathy is a variable disease; symptoms are not always obvious and can be mistaken for something less serious.

The AED Hunt on the Hill is an educational event that occurs during Children’s Cardiomyopathy Awareness Month to raise awareness of cardiomyopathy, the risk of sudden cardiac arrest, and the importance of emergency preparedness in a cardiac emergency. At the event, Members of Congress and congressional staffers take their photo with an automatic external defibrillator (AED) to highlight the importance of AED accessibility and early defibrillation in the event of a cardiac arrest. You, too, can participate in this awareness initiative in your hometown. There are AEDs in many public places such as airports, office buildings, sports stadiums, schools, and hospitals. Join the AED Hunt at Home and take a picture of you and your family with an AED in your community. Post your photo and location of the AED on social media with the handle @ccfheartkids and the hashtag #knowyourheart.

Together, we can all be more heart smart and save more lives.
